Big monitor brands are stockpiling displays as a buffer against Trump's tariffs
- The ongoing tariff battle between the US and China may result in a 5% increase in monitor prices for American buyers, marking a reversal from recent years of price declines.
- Major monitor brands, including Dell, HP, and Samsung, are stockpiling inventory in an attempt to mitigate the price hikes caused by rising tariffs on Chinese goods.
- Smaller monitor brands, already struggling to compete, could face even greater challenges due to disrupted supply chains and aggressive stockpiling by larger brands.
- While a 5% increase is considered the best-case scenario, the Consumer Technology Association warned that worst-case escalations could lead to price hikes of 60-100% for certain product categories.

Big Tech is still silent on Trump’s tariffs
- Big Tech companies remain silent about Donald Trump’s 10% tariff on goods that have been imported from China, despite the fact that the tariff has been in effect for nearly a week.
- Companies including AMD, Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, Broadcom, Dell, eBay, Fujifilm, Google, HP, Intel, LEGO, LG and Nikon have declined to comment and some have not responded to requests.
- Automakers, on the other hand, have been more vocal. For example, BMW declared that tariffs slow down innovation and hinder free trade, whilst VW has said it is assessing the potential impact.
- Companies may be hesitant to comment for several reasons; some may be waiting to see if the policy changes or is paused, while others may be worried about the impact new tariffs could have on their business.
- Higher costs to bring imported products into the US as a result of the tariff is likely to force companies to raise prices on their products, which may lead to margin decline, CNN notes.
- The tariffs that were introduced have already caused turmoil in some shipments and delivery services.
- Trump appears set to announce 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum products on 4 June.

Hardware quality problems and server supply chain kinks slow Amazon’s $100 billion AI build
- Amazon Web Services is encountering difficulties in procuring high-quality servers required for building AI infrastructure.
- The deficiencies came to light during Thursday's earnings call when Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and CFO Brian Olsavsky detailed the company's future intentions.
- The company has found an increased rate of technology development in artificial intelligence and machine learning requiring increased investment in the servers required, resulting in a reduction in useful life from six to five years as of January 2025.
- Alongside this, Amazon has had to retire some servers and networking boxes prematurely; reasons for early retirement remain undisclosed.
- Shortages of components like server motherboards and energy supply issues compound the problem, hampering the company's goal to expand its Capex, procure data centres, and hardware ahead of monetisation.
- While this build is anticipated to cost the company around $100 billion for the fiscal year 2025, it's a positive sign for AWS growth and Capex indicating a favourable medium- to long-term outlook.
- Annual revenue posting for Amazon of $107.6 billion for the year ended December 2024 representing a YoY rise of 19%.
- In striking comparison, annual revenue for proponents Dell, IBM, Cisco, and HPE were listed as $88.5 billion, $62.8 billion, $53.8 billion, and $30.1 billion respectively.
- For the year's quarter, the company estimated Q1 revenue of $151.0 - $155.5 billion, a growth of between 5 and 9%; shareholders' reaction was initially negative because of slow growth compared to competitors.
- Jassy reassured investors that the massive investment in AWS’s infrastructure was justified, saying the thought was that “virtually every application that we know of today is going to be reinvented with AI inside of it and with inference being a core building block just like compute and storage and database.”
