HPE is notifying individuals affected by a December 2023 attack
- HPE is notifying individuals affected by a December 2023 attack carried out by Russia-linked threat actors.
- The Midnight Blizzard (aka APT29, SVR group, Cozy Bear, Nobelium, BlueBravo, and The Dukes) group along with APT28 cyber espionage group was involved in the Democratic National Committee hack and the wave of attacks aimed at the 2016 US Presidential Elections.
- HPE investigation revealed that the attackers gained access to the company environment and exfiltrated data since May 2023.
- The IT giant determined that the intrusion is likely linked to another attack conducted by the same APT group, of which they were notified in June 2023.
- HPE emphasized that, as of the filing date, the incident has not significantly affected its operations.
- Microsoft warned that some of its corporate email accounts were compromised by the same Russia-linked group Midnight Blizzard.
- HPE recently confirmed that the incident was contained and remediated, but confirmed that threat actors gained access data from compromised mailboxes.
- With the assistance of e-discovery specialists, HPE conducted a thorough review of the data at issue to identify the types of information that may have been subject to unauthorized access and determine to whom this information relates.
- On February 5, 2025, HPE also notified the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation (OCABR) that Social Security numbers, driver’s license information, and credit or debit card numbers belonging to ten MA Residents were breached.
- At the time of this writing, the company has yet to reveal how many individuals are affected in total.

DeepSeek's iOS app is a security nightmare, and that's before you consider its TikTok links
- NowSecure researchers have determined DeepSeek, an iOS app that sends user data to China, contains security vulnerabilities and should deleted immediately. The third most popular app on the App Store, the app uses undocumented encryption methods and transmits data in plaintext. It also stores credentials and extensively fingerprints its users, and uses an outdated cipher and hardcoded encryption keys to defend against surveillance. The app sends data to ByteDance’s Volcano Engine public cloud service in China.
- US legislators Darin LaHood and Josh Gottheimer have introduced the No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act over concerns that the app is linked to the Chinese Communist Party and could relay user information to China Mobile.
- IMI plc has suffered an “unauthorised access” to its systems – the nature and scope of which is undisclosed. As of yet, the UK engineering firm has yet to disclose whether data was stolen or whether the attack involved ransomware, but has hired third-party cybersecurity experts to assess the after-effects.
- Spanish authorities have arrested Natohub, an online handle for a hacker alleged to have targeted the United Nations, Spain’s national government and the US Army, among other high profile targets. The 18-year-old suspect gained notoriety by boasting of his abilities for sale on dark web forums, but Spanish police tracked him after a business association in Madrid found its files leaked.
- Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has revealed that 10 of its employees have been impacted by a data breach, in which personal information was stolen from its cloud email environment in a nation-state attack. HPE advised the staff of the issue in an email.
- A new phishing campaign that uses an automated email service from Salesforce to send messages has been identified in which Facebook credentials are harvested. The campaign mainly targeted businesses across Europe, the US and Australia. The messages accuse users of sharing copyrighted material, and clicking on a button to appeal takes users to a landing page that harvests their Facebook credentials.
- Microsoft Outlook has joined the list of known exploited vulnerabilities – despite having been patched last year. The CVSS 9.8 remote code execution vulnerability now joins a series of other vulnerabilities that have been found in active exploitation. Buff overflows in Sophos XG Firewall versions up to 17.5 MR12, SQL injection vulnerabilities in Cyberoam OS’ web admin portal and a deserialization attack vulnerability in public asset management software affected by Cityworks have all been in recent use in the wild.

- HP Enterprise has dubbed the Russian government as responsible for a breach that stole dozens of users’ sensitive data during a major 2023 breach
- Data stolen included Social Security numbers, driver’s license information, and credit card numbers
- Thousands of students in the UK saw their data stolen as part of the recent data breach that impacted edtech company PowerSchool, according to a company statement
- Data stolen included contacts details, dates of birth and, in some cases, medical data
- Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented President Donald Trump with a golden pager during a meeting in Washington that referenced an attack in Lebanon against the militant group Hezbollah

Hardware quality problems and server supply chain kinks slow Amazon’s $100 billion AI build
- Amazon Web Services is encountering difficulties in procuring high-quality servers required for building AI infrastructure.
- The deficiencies came to light during Thursday's earnings call when Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and CFO Brian Olsavsky detailed the company's future intentions.
- The company has found an increased rate of technology development in artificial intelligence and machine learning requiring increased investment in the servers required, resulting in a reduction in useful life from six to five years as of January 2025.
- Alongside this, Amazon has had to retire some servers and networking boxes prematurely; reasons for early retirement remain undisclosed.
- Shortages of components like server motherboards and energy supply issues compound the problem, hampering the company's goal to expand its Capex, procure data centres, and hardware ahead of monetisation.
- While this build is anticipated to cost the company around $100 billion for the fiscal year 2025, it's a positive sign for AWS growth and Capex indicating a favourable medium- to long-term outlook.
- Annual revenue posting for Amazon of $107.6 billion for the year ended December 2024 representing a YoY rise of 19%.
- In striking comparison, annual revenue for proponents Dell, IBM, Cisco, and HPE were listed as $88.5 billion, $62.8 billion, $53.8 billion, and $30.1 billion respectively.
- For the year's quarter, the company estimated Q1 revenue of $151.0 - $155.5 billion, a growth of between 5 and 9%; shareholders' reaction was initially negative because of slow growth compared to competitors.
- Jassy reassured investors that the massive investment in AWS’s infrastructure was justified, saying the thought was that “virtually every application that we know of today is going to be reinvented with AI inside of it and with inference being a core building block just like compute and storage and database.”

HPE synergizes with OpsRamp to rethink hybrid cloud management
- HPE has looked to foster a unique kinship with OpsRamp in a bid to propagate the hybrid cloud operating model, following its acquisition of the company.
- The companies are working on a unified AI-driven and fully automated hybrid cloud platform, which would offer multicloud, multivendor support while reducing customers’ costs.
- HPE’s vision collapses operational silos, establishing a unified consistent operating model that deploys, monitors, observes, orchestrates, protects and optimises end-to-end hybrid cloud infrastructures.
- The OpsRamp acquisition enhanced the full-stack monitoring capabilities, AI-driven automation and network observability of the HPE GreenLake hybrid IT platform, serving for minimal disruption and maximum cloud efficiency.
- HPE GreenLake has brought the cloud experience on-prem, ensuring businesses don’t suffer from vendor lock-in while benefitting from streamlined, intelligent infrastructure management.
- The companies are working toward the creation of an autonomous data centre enabled by artificial intelligence and in-built network observability monitoring even the most massive and distributed workloads, a challenge the companies feel OpsRamp is perfectly positioned to go after.
- Operational silos introduce risks such as inconsistent workflow, trapped costs and governance issues. So a unified, consistent operating model for end-to-end hybrid cloud management is now seen as important for businesses.
- OpsRamp will not be absorbed or diluted within HPE following its acquisition: Instead, HPE is embracing the company's technological advancements and independent growth.
- HPE and OpsRamp are committed to customer choice and flexibility is being emphasised, as it is viewed as crucial in a rapidly evolving technological landscape where businesses require seamless integration across various cloud platforms and service providers.
- HPE and OpsRamp see generative AI, intelligent agents and automation as crucial talent for the creation of an autonomous, self-managing and self-optimising infrastructure.
