Career Advice: Switching from Adaptive AUTOSAR to Software Development Role

I'm currently working in an OEM, mainly involved in Adaptive AUTOSAR with a focus on R&D and requirement-related tasks, but with limited hands-on coding. I’m planning to transition to a software developer role and have started strengthening my C++ and Data Structures & Algorithms skills. I'm also interested in moving to a product-based company. Continuing in Adaptive AUTOSAR will mostly limit me to the automotive domain. Can I still get into a product-based company by staying in this domain, or is it better to shift to another area like backend development or core software engineering? Can I continue in Adaptive AUTOSAR and still grow in my career, or would it be better to move to another domain for broader opportunities? What would be the best path to take, and what skills or experience should I focus on to make this switch successfully? Any suggestions or guidance would be appreciated.

Transitioning to a product-based company is absolutely achievable, especially if you build on core software skills like backend development and system design. Adaptive AUTOSAR can be a niche, but learning widely applicable skills like cloud computing or data engineering will significantly broaden your options.

Mujhe lagta hai Adaptive AUTOSAR ka future limited hai agar tujhe full dev roles chahiye.

Honestly OEMs sometimes underutilize developers. Too much documentation too little real coding.

Explore open source projects or side projects using modern C++ or even Rust. It shows your interest outside the auto domain and makes your profile stronger for product-based roles.

Tu already C++ aur DSA pe kaam kar raha hai toh backend dev ya system programming roles try kar. Automotive mein rehne ka matlab hai domain fix ho jana. Broader growth ke liye switch better hai.

I was in a similar boat. Worked in automotive for a couple of years, then switched to backend engineering in a fintech startup. Took me 6 months of prep, but the transition was smooth because of my strong C++ base.

Do you enjoy working on embedded systems or do you want to move to more application-level dev? That can help decide whether you should go deeper in autosar or shift focus completely.

Switching to backend or full-stack roles may offer more flexibility in terms of job opportunities, especially in product-based companies. However, Adaptive AUTOSAR does have its place in the automotive sector and can open doors to specialized roles if you want to stay within the domain.
