Does Kolkata have the dumbest at IT sector in India?🙄🙄
The pay feels illegally low. Companies are doing zero to negligible original work. They think software engineering is something where you hire people who work 20 hours a day for 20k salary. I recently spoke to a company called bluebuck research located in dingy Kaikhali. That company had the audacity to tell me since I have been preparing for UPSC, I might not be able to answer his dumb Python questions when I have a GSOC internship and a NIT degree. Like shove your 30k jobs up your whatever. If you cannot interview, politely reject- don’t gauge candidates from gaps when people in US without having degrees are in programming jobs. 0 sense.
Plus what is this illegally low pay to everyone and not just me? Has labour become that damn cheap? It is reprehensible.

Answer is Yes, the reason : Bangalore is full of Bengali IT engineers, here people are more interested in Politics rather than jobs, education, some 4th pass guy becomes minister here while people like you from Top tier colleges struggle like hell to get a job, eventually will get frustrated & will relocate to Bangalore if you are not into the Government job, Bangalore is not solution, it’s done, Kannada people don’t want outsiders there while their entire economy is based on tax payers of outsiders.

[therock94](username) If so many talented folks from Bengal are already in Bangalore and doing well, then is the issue really with Bengal’s people or with the system and companies that operate out of Kolkata? Why should local engineers be blamed for poor hiring practices, exploitative pay, or political dysfunction?
Also, if Bangalore is “done” and outsiders aren’t welcome, what real options do young engineers from Bengal have if local companies don’t respect skill or pay decently?

[faithfuldhokla](username) that you should ask the people around you who are doing slavery of political goons of Bengal. Bangalore is not done, It is in process to be done, India is a big country, Bangalore is not only the solution, the problem is with people’s mindsets, nothing else.

[therock94](username) So basically the solution is to magically fix people’s mindsets while still offering them no jobs and blaming them for everything from poor pay to political chaos. Got it.
And if Bangalore is in the process of being "done" but still the best shot most engineers have, maybe the problem isn’t just with mindsets but with the fact that Kolkata and similar cities haven’t given them a real choice.
Not everyone is doing slavery for political goons, most are just trying to survive a broken system. But sure, let’s keep blaming the victims instead of fixing the mess.

[therock94](username) So basically, Kolkata pays in peanuts, Bangalore resents migrants, and the real villain is a broken system pretending it's merit-based.

whenever the salary conversation comes up, eki boka-boka reply sune sune kaan pocche gelo (that salary is low because cost of living is low). At a certain living standard, yes it is low. So, if you would need 40k to survive in any other metro city, you can have the same lifestyle for 20-25k in Kolkata. But for high paying white collar jobs, the salaries are outright scam. For a job that you might get 30-50L in Bangalore or even Noida, you will be lucky to get 18LPA offer in Kolkata. Yes instead of like 60k, you will be paying like 40k for rent but everything else (cost of cabs, good food, etc.) is pretty much on par with any other big city. For a 10-15% savings in life style cost, you will have to give up anywhere from 30-50% of your money in hand.
The real reason for the salary is a simple supply and demand thing. I have spent some time interviewing candidates from the city, trying to build a Kolkata based team for the startup I was working at back then. And the honest truth is that the quality of talent left behind in Kolkata is not upto the mark. This might sound harsh or that I am stereotyping about Bangalis. But that's not the point. Go to any IT team India and abroad, you won't have to search long before you find a Bengali guy. So, it's not that Bengalis don't have talent but rather those who have it, has already left the city. Even for those who are working in India, very few actually even want to come back to Kolkata when given the chance. Which has created a spiral, salaries and the quality of job doesn't go up because talents who deserve such salaries are not in this city and since the salary is not competitive with other cities anymore and even if you get an outlier offer, talents don't want to take the risk of coming back once they have settled in another city.

Tbh, so am I. I am not looking to hire anymore and currently enjoying a sabbatical after our last startup got acquihired. If there are startups working out of Kolkata, I would gladly help them for free on either running their stuff on my infra or just some advice.

Labour has always been cheap in a country like India.
In Kolkata, the cost of living is still low because of cheap labour. And IT is in the heart of it.
Apply for standard companies and Big 4s. You should be fine.
