How do you check your market value without switching jobs?

Anyone can respond Last week, I found out that a coworker with a lower job title is earning 20% more than me. That hit me so hard Now I want to prepare for a conversation with my manager, but I don’t want to walk in blindly. I want actual data to back up my case. Besides throwing my resume out there and seeing what other offers I get, how do you usually compare your salary to the market or industry standards? Would really appreciate any tips, tools, or personal experience

honestly I just take recruiter calls whenever I have some spare time, they just want to make a deal so most of them will be up front about salary pretty early on. Funniest moment was when I was 8 months pregnant and I realized a job was 20K above my salary AND one day less in the office (it would be hybrid to hybrid but three days versus two days and more pay) and I had to politely say I wasn't interested like it wasn't enough money lol. I also check salary ranges on comparable positions, keep in touch with friends and former coworkers especially male coworkers who love to brag about their salary.

All valid reasons. If you have a good manager, they would be happier that you went to them for a salary adjustment vs. not talking to them and leaving because you weren't paid enough. I also never advocated for myself until recently and it's been an interesting journey. With the awards and top performance, can you tie it into a promotion? This is a topic I am highly interested in because I don't believe in getting a salary just because someone else makes it as there are so many other factors to consider. No two people do the same job. Did your co-worker come in after you? Is her 20% more aligning with market? Did she come in with more education/experience? I'm coming up on a promotion so I recently did this to make sure I had a case for if/when salary didn't match my expectations. I used the salary websites for my area, subscribed to job alerts for the title looked on forums for those "what's your salary" threads. I also made sure to have a reasonable number and why.
