Interview Tips & Stories

No Job Is Worth That Kind of Disrespect.
I really wish someone had told me earlier , you can walk out of an interview if it’s going south.
I was 24, super eager to join a company I admired. made it to round 2 and was trying my best to impress.
They asked me something I wasn’t directly handling I said I didn’t know. One of the interviewers snapped, mocked my prep, demanded exact KPIs, and even questioned how I made it to that round. When I said some info was confidential, he didn’t care.
He ended it with: “Don’t hold your breath for a callback.”
I left feeling humiliated. Just sat in silence after.
Looking back, I wish I had walked out the moment it turned disrespectful.
But yeah live and learn. Never again.

Had an interviewer who wasn’t prepared.
I had an interview for a job during the height covid for a creative position . I always make sure to forward my portfolio website before hand so the interviewer has time to at least look at it on the confirmation for an interview. I get on a video call with the manager and she’s working from home but having difficulty handling a special needs child. It was also obvious she didn’t look my resume or my portfolio site asking me instead to walk her through both. In the midst of it, she accidentally let another candidate join in on our call, who quickly left. I should’ve just ended things there but I didn’t. She ended the interview promising to review my items. I was ghosted.

@boredinlife That's understandable to me given that covid was really tough on some people, but it's still annoying when an interviewer doesn't read your resume beforehand.

I had a 'draw a bicycle' question in an interview, I got up and walked silently, shaking my head out. The hr person attending followed me out, apologising. I just said 'your company cultures fu...d'.
She sent me an email, saying it was unfortunate because I was the top candidate, the only one with relevant experience, she sent me the proposed salary as if to entice me to open a dialogue, it was 10k less than what I was on at my current employer...
To top it off I wasn't even looking for a new job, they'd contacted me on LinkedIn.

I wen to all the way to south, spent the entire day going through interviews, small talk, and those over the top corporate lunches.
Everything felt fine… until I was about to leave for the airport. That’s when the hr lady quietly pulls me aside and says, “The interviewers felt your skills didn’t match the salary you were asking. But we are still happy to move forward if you’re interested.”
Till this day nearly 2 years later I still don’t get it.
Why go through all that effort just to play mind games?
Like… did they really think a free lunch and fancy building would convince me to settle for less?
The arrogance some companies operate with is honestly baffling.

You can terminate any conversation if it's going that badly. even if they are a customer and you are an employee you can get a manager or ask them to be more respectful or ask them to leave, depending on the situation.

I was told it was a one candidate interview.
There were about 20 candidates in the room, one recruiter, as part of a “group interview”
