Facing Rejection for a 5-Year Gap Despite 1M+ App Downloads: What Should I Do?
I am an Android developer with 5.8 years of experience as an Android developer. I used to work at a startup in Pune for 8 months in the beginning. Then I started my own app business. I have developed and published various apps on the Play Store, which have collectively crossed over 1 million downloads. I have been self-employed for 5 years, but now I am seeking an Android developer job. I have been receiving lots of calls, but I am not getting shortlisted due to the 5-year gap. What should I do now?

Try selling your app to company in similar domain and get absorbed in that company at senior position.

[a deputy manager](username) how? In acquisitions, many founders join companies as product head etc.

@troylover Yes you are right, but it is own choice to sell his idea ad product and lead as a head or keep creating more as individual or by creating a startup

Your gap isn’t a gap, it’s entrepreneurial experience. Frame it that way in your resume and interviews.

[hoofhearted](username) Thank you for the suggestion! I’ve been explaining my entrepreneurial experience by sharing how I handled apps with millions of users, built them from scratch, and managed everything myself. These tasks were often harder than corporate work.
Then HR asked me, "Why are you coming back to corporate work?"
I said I’m looking for the structure and teamwork that a corporate job provides.
HR then said, "If you want to work in a team, why don’t you hire people?"
I explained that I don’t have enough resources to hire a team right now.
Then HR asked, "If you get the resources, you might leave the job."

[an android developer](username) the HR has a point here. You need to show them that you actually need a job and not be going to focus much on the apps. Seems like they have a trust issue with you that you won't last long. Show them your apps aren't making you financially stable and I need a job where I can showcase my previous learning and skills.

Recruiters love buzzwords, maybe rebranding your self-employment as a 'startup venture' could help.

[ctrlaltdelmyjob](username) Maybe! I’ll try it on my resume and see if it works. Thanks for the idea!

You’re not alone. Many indie devs face this. Try reaching out via referrals; they bypass some filters.

[officechairwarrior](username) Yes, I am also trying with referrals. What do you think. what type of company do I have a better chance with, product-based or service-based? Is DSA necessary for PBC, or can they hire me based on my development knowledge? I am very good at Android development, but not that good at DSA.

Try product-based companies or startups. They often value hands-on experience over linear career paths.

[chrispbacon](username) I want to join product based company. I am applying to them, but I don’t know why I’m not getting any calls from them.

Just out of curiosity, how much do you earn from your app? Which category is your app in?
