Will Union Budget 2025 Lift Off India’s Space Mission?
- India's space industry is gaining momentum and the upcoming Union Budget is set to bolster it. India's space economy was valued at $8.4 billion and was 2% of the global space market last year. India aims to grow its space economy to $44 billion by 2033, including $11 billion in exports, to attain a 7-8% global share. Startups in space technology stand to benefit from the $1,000 crore space economy VC fund and R&D fund India's finance minister announced in the previous budget. The Cabinet approved the Gaganyaan follow-on mission along with other space missions.
- The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully completed its SpaDeX mission, making India the fourth country to achieve space docking alongside the United States, Russia, and China. The mission saw experiments from numerous Indian space startups. Noteworthy among these companies are Bellatrix Aerospace Pvt Ltd, Pixxel and Skyroot Aerospace, which focus on space-based data analytics, earth observation applications, and launch vehicle development. India's space policy allows private companies to hire talent from across the globe, unlike restrictive policies in some other countries, according to Ronak Kumar Samantray, founder of TakeMe2Space.
- Rohan M Ganapathy, CEO and CTO of Bellatrix Aerospace, and Ankit Anand, founding partner at Riceberg Ventures, emphasise the need for government contracts. Victor Rodrigues, co-founder and executive director of the upcoming Lisbon Space Academy, opined that the collaboration between India and Portugal would be mutually beneficial in space technology development. Mughilan Thiru Ramasamy, co-founder and CEO at Skylark Drones, predicts increased budget allocations towards the drone program and emphasises the need for adopting drones in infrastructure and agriculture beyond just incentives.
- Ankit Mehta, CEO of ideaForge Technology Limited, is optimistic about the potential launch of a Production-Linked Incentive Scheme 2.0 for drones and emphasises the need for a dedicated R&D fund to drive innovation, product development, and exports. The 2025 Union Budget has the potential to solidify India's position as a global leader in drone technology, drive growth, create high-value jobs, and ensure technological sovereignty, he added.
