A transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction.

Consists of two coils of wire, primary and secondary, wrapped around a core
Primary coil is connected to a source of alternating current
Alternating current in primary coil creates a changing magnetic field in the core
This changing magnetic field induces a voltage in the secondary coil
Voltage in secondary coil can be higher or lower than the voltage in the primary coil, depending on the number of turns in each coil

ट्रांसफॉर्मर, विद्युत चुम्बकीय प्रेरण के सिद्धांत पर काम करता है, जो एक स्थिर उपकरण है जो AC वोल्टेज को बिना ऊर्जा हानि के एक स्तर से दूसरे स्तर में बदलता है, अर्थात बढ़ा या घटा सकता है। 
कार्य सिद्धांत:
दो कुंडलियाँ:
ट्रांसफॉर्मर में दो कुंडलियाँ होती हैं - प्राथमिक कुंडली (इनपुट) और द्वितीयक कुंडली (आउटपुट). 
चुम्बकीय कोर:
दोनों कुंडलियाँ एक लोहे के कोर पर लपेटी जाती हैं. 
चुम्बकीय क्षेत्र:
जब प्राथमिक कुंडली में AC करंट प्रवाहित होता है, तो यह कोर में एक बदलते हुए चुम्बकीय क्षेत्र का उत्पादन करता है. 
प्रेरित वोल्टेज:
यह बदलते हुए चुम्बकीय क्षेत्र द्वितीयक कुंडली में एक वोल्टेज (इलेक्ट्रोमोटिव फोर्स या EMF) प्रेरित करता है. 
वोल्टेज परिवर्तन:
द्वितीयक कुंडली में प्रेरित वोल्टेज की मात्रा प्राथमिक कुंडली में वोल्टेज की मात्रा और दोनों कुंडलियों में फेरों की संख्या के अनुपात पर निर्भर करती है. 
प्रकार:
यदि द्वितीयक कुंडली में फेरों की संख्या प्राथमिक कुंडली की तुलना में अधिक है, तो ट्रांसफॉर्मर एक "स्टेप-अप" ट्रांसफॉर्मर है (वोल्टेज को बढ़ाता है), और यदि कम है, तो यह एक "स्टेप-डाउन" ट्रांसफॉर्मर है (वोल्टेज को घटाता है). 
उदाहरण:
स्टेप-अप ट्रांसफॉर्मर:
यदि प्राथमिक कुंडली में 100 फेरे हैं और द्वितीयक कुंडली में 200 फेरे हैं, तो द्वितीयक कुंडली में वोल्टेज प्राथमिक कुंडली की तुलना में दोगुना होगा.
स्टेप-डाउन ट्रांसफॉर्मर:
यदि प्राथमिक कुंडली में 200 फेरे हैं और द्वितीयक कुंडली में 100 फेरे हैं, तो द्वितीयक कुंडली में वोल्टेज प्राथमिक कुंडली की तुलना में आधा होगा.
