JOB DESCRIPTION FOR HEAD PHARMACY

  • POSITION: - HEAD PHARMACY
  • DEPARTMENT: - PHARMACY
  • QUALIFICATION: - B.PHARM / D.PHARM
  • EXPERIENCE: - MINIMUM OF 7-10 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN A HOSPITAL PHARMACY SETTING. WITH AT LEAST 5 YEARS IN A LEADERSHIP OR MANAGEMENT ROLE.

Position Overview:

The Head of Pharmacy is a crucial leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of the pharmacy department within the hospital. This includes managing the procurement, storage, and distribution of medications, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, optimizing pharmacy operations, and providing strategic direction to enhance patient care. The Head of Pharmacy will lead a team of pharmacists, technicians, and support staff, working collaboratively with other departments to deliver high-quality pharmaceutical services.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement the strategic plan for the pharmacy department aligned with the hospital's mission, vision, and goals.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the pharmacy team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop and execute initiatives that improve patient care and operational efficiency.

2. Medication Management:

  • Oversee the procurement, storage, and distribution of medications, ensuring accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and accreditation standards related to pharmacy operations.
  • Implement and maintain inventory management systems to minimize waste and control costs.

3. Clinical Pharmacy Services:

  • Promote and oversee the provision of clinical pharmacy services, including medication therapy management, patient counseling, and drug utilization reviews.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to optimize medication regimens and improve patient outcomes.
  • Ensure the pharmacy team is actively involved in patient care rounds and clinical decision-making processes.

4. Staff Management and Development:

  • Recruit, train, and manage pharmacy staff, ensuring they are qualified, competent, and motivated.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that encourages teamwork and innovation.

5. Quality Assurance and Improvement:

  • Develop and implement quality assurance programs to monitor and improve pharmacy services.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Lead initiatives to improve medication safety, reduce errors, and enhance the overall quality of care.

6. Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage the pharmacy department budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and cost-effective operations.
  • Monitor financial performance and implement strategies to achieve financial goals.
  • Explore opportunities for revenue enhancement and cost savings within the department.

7. Patient and Provider Education:

  • Provide education and training to patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers on medication use, safety, and best practices.
  • Develop and disseminate educational materials and resources to support informed decision-making.
  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in pharmaceutical care and share knowledge with the pharmacy team.

8. Technology and Innovation:

  • Implement and optimize the use of pharmacy information systems and technology to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Explore and integrate new technologies and innovations that enhance pharmacy services and patient care.
  • Ensure the secure and effective use of electronic health records (EHR) and other digital tools in the pharmacy department.

Skills:

  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities. Proficiency with pharmacy information systems and technology.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of pharmacotherapy, medication safety, regulatory standards, and best practices in hospital pharmacy operations.
