In my own experience, I've seen many employees being pushed by the higher authority to put down their papers, including myself. The best performing employees were let go during layoffs, including a female candidate as she came back from maternity 2 months ago. I was told by my manager that I won't be promoted as the business has been seeing profits because of my hard work. If they promote me, they won't have my substitute.
