Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I was geared up for applying to universities for Ph. D. I, therefore prepared my resume to highlight my undergraduate research, course work and academic achievements, programming skills. I read a few resumes from seniors who applied to and did get scholarships from good universities.

Round: Test
Experience: Written + technical interviews. No HR at all. Were good math problems and puzzles. 16 were shortlisted from resume. 4 were offered a job.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Problem examples:   Given m sorted lists, each of length n, merge them to form a single list of length mn.   Given two eggs and a hundred story building. The eggs break when dropped from a particular floor 'k' or higher. Find minimum number of total drops required to determine k.
Tips: Algorithms and Programming, that's all..... Nothing else required :)Just keep your mind alert. These are not at all hard questions. When worked through, they can be cracked pretty easily :)

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I looked at resumes of previously successful candidates with profiles similar to mine. After reaching a level I thought fit, I sent it for review to several friends, mostly those who'd already appeared for placements the previous years. In particular, I sent it to people in companies where I was applying. Feedback from them dramatically changed my resume.
Tips: The PPTs helped me eliminate (rather than choose) companies I'd want to apply for. I usually found people in the companies I thought I'd like to apply to or people in similar positions in other companies.

Round: Test
Experience: There was an initial resume shortlisting (mostly based on CPI) & around 15 people shortlisted. This was followed by a written round & 10 people shortlisted. Two interview rounds, 1 hour each. Final offers were made to 4 people.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interviews had three basic parts:   resume/HR  where the interviewer looked at the resume and asked questions about specific points. Was also asked about a time when I achieved much in less time.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Technical  these were pure algorithm kind of questions. Some questions based on c++   Puzzles this was the bulk of the interview. Lot of time was given to figure out the puzzles and thinking out loud was encouraged. Help was also provided.

General Tips: a. dress in formals (suits probably not required for most  at least not the technical ones)   b. carry a pack of biscuits and a bottle of water/juice in a bag. You may not get time to have a proper lunch   c. keep calm. the interviewers aren't here to punish you.

1 Interview Round

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Procedure - Interview first round @ IIT, second round – telephonic interview from Taiwan
Tips: My experience : - after first round selection they were supposed to call for telephonic interview, but they did not call me up for the best reasons known to them. But no one is complaining.

General Tips: My preparation for software companies was not up to the mark. My advice to the M.Tech students with Science backgrounds are  (i) Please do not expect a core company to hire you. Software companies are the only choice   (ii) Hence prepare well in advance the following topics this was not known to me earlier. (a) STRONG C & C++ LANGUAGE SKILLS   (b) EMPHASIS ON DATA STRUCTURES --- linked lists, trees, queue, post-order traversal, pre-order traversal.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I've gone through some model resumes available in freshersworld.com.

Round: Test
Experience: There were three rounds- Written, Technical & HR   Out of 100 students 20 students are selected for Tech & HR round after written test.   But finally 7 students were made final offers.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In interview they asked-   what do u mean by quality, array, pointer, data structures etc . Hr questions, they asked  (i) why u r interested in joining our company this is a standard question..   (ii)Why u r leaving ur core branch and joining software company, r u doing any justice to ur studies??   (iii) Since I was married, in most of the HR rounds they are a bit cynical, my advice to married people, if u r prompted to tell abt ur maritial status, then tell otherwise not.
Tips: HR Questions- I've gone through the last year BE PREPARED  document.   Puzzles- R.S Agarwal   Technical- For Core subjects not needed but for software companies strong language skills are important.

General Tips: My preparation for software companies was not up to the mark. My advice to the M.Tech students with Science backgrounds are  (i) Please do not expect a core company to hire you .Software companies are the only choice   (ii) Hence prepare well in advance the following topics this was not known to me  (a) STRONG C & C++ LANGUAGE SKILLS   (b) EMPHASIS ON DATA STRUCTURES --- linked lists, trees, queue, post-order traversal, pre-order traversal.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: First a technical test, then 1 round of technical interview, then a very interesting group activity (I enjoyed that the most) and one more technical interview and then a HR interview – shortlist after each of these.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Lets not talk about the technical interview its like any other technical interview about C++. But the interesting part was the group activity in which we were divided in group of 6/7 and given a packet of straws we had to come up with some idea to build something and then promote our product with a picture presentation in 45-50 minutes. Interviews were watching the groups.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Used some old resumes sent by placement team/collected from seniors and batch mates to prepare a basic resume & ; then showed it to friends who edited, re-edited it. Still I feel I should have shown it to more number of friends and seniors who are already in job.

Round: Test
Experience: IT & a technical test with different selection criteria for the 2 positions they had, then a technical (with a little bit of HR) interview completely based on the test paper (resume was not even seen). Anyways then interview (more of HR kind) taken by the director himself. And then the offer letter! :D There are 100 statements  nth statement saying Exactly n statements are true.  Which one statement is true? Science questions like ; how does lightening happens?! Probability  In a pistol 2 bullets are there one after the other, you fire once  nothing happens. Now which situation will have lesser probability of having a shot in next fire, the one where you shuffle the pistol before firing or the one where you do not? The idea was to test the stress you while solving these questions.

General Tips: My major interviews have been with IT companies  just sharpen your C++ before you sit for these companies. You should not just be knowing coding but also have good command over its theory which we generally ignore while coding.
