Interview Preparation Tips

Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - Whenever you are going for an interview, preparation becomes the most vital thing. There is no doubt that you will be having comprehensive knowledge and expertise in your field of study but if you will be having good knowledge of the work ethics, culture and working environment of the company or enterprise which is going to interview you will enhance your chances. Study their website well. Try to gain knowledge about how they work, what kind of strategy they usually follow, their preferences, their expectations from employees etc. When i got interviewed by Deloitte, it comprised 3 rounds namely: Group Discussion (G.D.), Manager round, Partner's round. Try to keep it simple. Be confident about what you know and what can you do well. Be polite, be a good listener, be what you are. Express yourself in the best possible way. In Group Discussion, try to be the leader, take initiative, don't interrupt when someone is speaking, don't wait for your turn and whenever you get an opportunity, speak. Use facts and examples to explain your point.
Wish you all the best.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: All sections were adaptive and you can't come back one question once you submitted a question. The questions were not so easy or so hard. But mostly every question was tricky and not too time consuming. 1 minute break after every section and instructions were clear. No negative marks.
Tips: Your success depends on how fast and how well you understand the question and how quick you respond to it. Don't spend too much time on a single question. If you are struck with a question, just mark an approximate guess and move on so that you will be able to at attend maximum number of questions and who knows you might get the easy questions at the last. Keep a track of how much time is remaining and how many questions are remaining and manage your time accordingly.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Total Questions: 40

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: We, a group of 10 students were given a problem and shortcomings and were given two minutes to write down the points and then 15 minutes to discuss among ourselves and come to a conclusion and then 5 mins to present our solution using a chart paper.
Tips: Don't try to dominate the GD. Give chance for everyone to speak. Listen when other person is speaking. Stick to the topic and don't deviate much. If there is chaos in the group, be the one to calm them down and make it more organized.
Duration: 30 minutes

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: The interviewer was very polite and listened to me with a lot of patience which reduced my nervousness and made me to speak freely to him. Most of the time , I spoke about my project and the difficulties I overcome during my project.
Tips: Do not lie on a Resume or an Interview. If you do not know the answer for any question, just tell the interviewer frankly that you don't know the answer of that question. Stay calm and confident. Sit right and have a smile in your face and do not interrupt while the interviewer is asking questions. Let him finish and then you start talking. Don't make the interviewer to get bored by telling long stories which are irrelevant. Keep your answers short and sweet.

I have an offer from Deloitte India (as a Deputy Manager - Enterprise Security) and Novartis (Specialist - Microsoft Sentinel). I hear a lot of negative feedback about the work culture of Deloitte India while there is not so much positivity about Novartis as well. Can someone working at these orgs share their thoughts? I have also heard there is quite a lot of travel required in Deloitte India, if someone has similar or even opposing thoughts, please share.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Based on a cut off of 7.5

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: 5-7 minutes.Abstract topic, so open ended. Within logical boundaries you could be as creative as possible. The discussion went from  importance of binary system to philosophical bearings of "its all relative".  We had to sum up key points discussed towards the end of GD with positives and negatives of "life without zero".
Tips: Don'ts:Never look at the moderator while making your point, always engage your colleagues.Never interrupt other person midway, if the moderator is sensible enough, everyone would get chance to make their point.Dos:You don't always have to jump to start the GD, but try to put across your points articulately when your turn comes.Always bring a pen and Paper to GD (In case they don't provide) to note down your point of view on the topic. If possible, try to set the tone of the GD in the beginning by pointing out different aspects that can be discussed. (You might get brownie points for that)

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: This round was lasted for around half an hour. I had interned in a Private Equity Research firm focusing on greentech. So they picked up a case from my resume. (This might happen, so be thorough with your internships). They will look for you ability to break-down a problem statement to smaller streams, multidimensional  approach and clarity in thought process.
Tips: 1. Reiterate the problem statement before you start solving the case 2. Think out loud with possible approaches, solutions, etc and pros and cons for each one3. Summarize at the end

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Lasted for almost an hour.Typical questions like1. Tell me something about yourself2. Why consulting and KPMG3. Long term goals and how KPMG fits in 4. 3 things you feel you need to improve upon
Tips: "Tell me something about yourself" sets the tone for this round so be prepared with a quick 2-3 minutes response to steer the discussion towards the points you want to highlight from your resume.
A few stress interview questions. Make sure you take your time to answer without panicking.

General Tips: 1. Be clear on what type of companies you want to apply (Core, Consult, Fin, etc) and why2. Don't fall pray to peer pressure. Company-candidate fit is the most important thing from long term perspective.
3. Be thorough with your resume and story line4. Practice HR questions with your wing mates
Skills: Problem Solving
College Name: IIT MADRAS
Motivation: I was interested working in consult to begin my career, as it gives you good exposure across companies, sectors, you get to interact with different kinds of people and yea you get to travel.
Funny Moments: One of the consultant who had come down for tech rounds interacted with me outside the room and we had a chat on Saarang and Cricket for a while. Helped me settle down quickly during the interview.

Tips: Prefer a one pager resume in case of fresher.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Out of total 120 applicants shortlisted after resume screening in total 60 passed the group discussion round. GD panel consisted of two judges from EY and number of candidates were 15 in one group.
Tips: If you missed your chance to be the first speaker then try being the moderator. If you missed that too then last speaker i.e. summary maker is the good way to crack a GD.

Round: Technical & HR
Experience: Interview lasted for 50-55 minutes. Panel consisted of two person one from HR and other from technical.More or less it concentrates on the activities you have done in past both academic (minor) and extra curricular (major) activities.
I was later served with a case study related to risk advisory (since I have applied for risk advisory services and related to civil engineering as I am a civil engineer), "If I were a consultant from EY and assigned a project to go to a bridge construction site then on meeting the contractor what all types of risk can I identify there and what measures should be taken to mitigate them or to reduce their frequency and impact."

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: McKinsey looks for a spike in your resume, people who have commendable achievements is their field of choice, academics, extra curriculars or sports. So be sure to make your resume accordingly. McKinsey adds a lot of weight-age to formal awards, scholarships, achievements (like inter-IIT) etc. But if you don?t have them (like me) you just have to make extra effort to show that you have equivalent achievements.

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: First I was asked about myself and mostly my connection to dance and the dance club. (Some interviewers do this to make you comfortable at the same time analyzing your personality). In the first interview I was given an estimation case about the dish TV industry. Here the interviewer was mostly interested in my approach to solving the problem and if applicable my numerical skills. The second interview was a pure business case about the printing business. Here my creativity and business sense (read common sense as applicable to a business situation) was put to test.
Tips: Take on every interview as if that job doesn?t mean anything to you.
